AED pads and battery replacement: when, why and how

Pads and a battery are the two parts of a defibrillator that wear out, and they are the most common reason a unit fails when it is needed. Keeping them in date is the simplest, most important upkeep you can do.

Why pads and batteries expire

AED pads carry a conductive gel and an adhesive that dry out over time, which is why they have an expiry date printed on the pack. A battery slowly loses charge whether the unit is used or not. Both are designed to be replaced on a schedule, not left until they fail.

How long do they last?

  • Pads: around two to four years from manufacture, and once used they must be replaced.
  • Batteries: around two to five years, depending on the model.

Always go by the dates printed on your specific pads and battery, and by the unit's own prompts.

How to replace them

  1. Check the make and model of your AED so you order the correct parts. Pads and batteries are model-specific and are not interchangeable across brands.
  2. Order the matching pads or battery. If you are unsure, send us your model or a photo and we will confirm the right part.
  3. Follow the unit's instructions to fit the new part, then run or wait for the self-test to confirm the device is ready.
  4. Log the new expiry date so you know when the next replacement is due.
