Keeping your defibrillator rescue-ready: AED maintenance explained

An AED is only as good as its readiness on the day it is needed. Pads dry out, batteries run down, and self-test faults go unnoticed if no one is watching. Maintenance is what turns a device on the wall into a device that works.

What can go wrong if you do nothing

  • Pads pass their expiry date and lose their adhesive and gel, so they may not work.
  • The battery drains below the level needed to deliver a shock.
  • A self-test fault flags on the unit but no one notices because no one is checking.

What AED maintenance covers

  • Pad and battery tracking and replacement, so the unit never quietly goes out of date.
  • Self-test and fault checks, confirming the device is passing its internal checks.
  • Readiness reporting, a clear record useful for insurance, audits and peace of mind.
  • Fleet management, remote monitoring of several units across sites from one screen.

How often should you check an AED?

  • Monthly: glance at the status indicator to confirm the self-test is passing.
  • Yearly: review pads and battery against their expiry dates and plan replacements.
  • As prompted: act on any fault indicator straight away.

A maintenance plan handles all of this for you, so nothing depends on someone remembering.

Why a local maintenance partner matters

Frequently asked questions

How often should a defibrillator be serviced?

Check the self-test indicator monthly, and review pads and battery against their expiry dates at least yearly. A maintenance plan handles this so nothing is missed.

What does AED maintenance involve?

Tracking and replacing pads and batteries before they expire, confirming the device passes its self-tests, and providing a readiness record. Fleet monitoring is available for multiple units.

Can you service a defibrillator you did not supply?

Yes. We maintain and supply parts for all leading brands, regardless of where the unit was bought.

What happens if my AED pads or battery expire?

Expired pads or a flat battery can stop the unit working in an emergency. Maintenance replaces them before they lapse, and we can supply replacements quickly if yours have already gone.
