The Philips HS1 Adult Smart Pads are designed to be used on adults only. The Philips HS1 Adult Smart Pads should not be used on children under eight or that weigh less than 25 kg. When operating on a child, responders must use different paediatric pads specifically for children. Adults require a greater electric shock from the defibrillator, and the Philips HS1 Adult Smart Pads can accommodate that voltage.

The Philips HS1 Adult Smart Pads can be used with a semi or fully-automatic defibrillator. The two types of devices deliver the same treatment to a casualty of sudden cardiac arrest; however, they require different levels of user input. When responding to someone in sudden cardiac arrest, a defibrillator needs two electrode pads to administer the treatment correctly. It is recommended that defibrillator owners always have at least one pair of pads stored separately so that a replacement is always available.
