Additional Information

The Defibtech Paediatric Pads (DDU100E) are designed to provide a lower energy shock level of 50 joules, suitable for the treatment of infants and children aged between 1 to 8 years or less than 25kg/55lb. The pads come in a sealed package, with visual instructions on how to position the pads, helping to guide the responder in an emergency.

Q&A
  1. Are the paediatric pads reusable?

No, neither the paediatric nor the adult pads may be reused. The pads, like other medical equipment, are single-use only and must be replaced once used or out of date The paediatric pads have an average shelf life of up to two years.

  2. When should I use the paediatric pads?

The paediatric pads should be used to treat a child experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. Defibrillation should only occur if the child is unresponsive and unconscious. It is important to note that the paediatric pads must be used on children under eight or weighing less than 25 kg. Quick action is vital when administering treatment to someone in sudden cardiac arrest, and using the paediatric pads in conjunction with a defibrillator could help save a child.

  3. Can I use the pads if I have no training?

Training is not a requirement when operating a defibrillator and pads. Both trained and untrained responders can deliver potentially life-saving treatment quickly and confidently. Most defibrillators have visual and voice prompts that walk the user through the process step-by-step.

If you’re interested in training, we offer several courses, ranging from CPR to first aid, safety in the workplace, and healthcare. To find out more about the course we have available, visit our page https://www.hearts.ie/training/

While training is not an essential part of using a defibrillator and pads, it may help boost your confidence.

  4. Can I use the paediatric pads on adults?

Adults or children weighing more than 25 kg should not use the paediatric pads. The paediatric pads cannot deliver the correct voltage needed to treat a person over this weight in sudden cardiac arrest. Paediatric pads are designed specifically for children under the age of eight or who weigh less than 25 kg. Adult pads are made to deliver the high voltage needed to stabilise an adult's heart rhythm.

Having both paediatric and adult pads on hand will give you peace of mind in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest.
