AED Storage Solutions: Indoor and Outdoor Cabinets for Defibrillators

Storing your AED defibrillator correctly is just as important as having one in the first place. Proper storage ensures your device is visible, accessible within seconds, protected from damage, and always ready for use. Heartsafety Solutions offers a comprehensive range of AED storage solutions designed for every environment.

Why AED Storage Matters

In a cardiac emergency, every second counts. If your AED is locked in a cupboard, stored in a manager’s office, or kept in an unmarked location, the critical minutes spent searching for it could cost a life. International best practice recommends that an AED should be retrievable within two minutes from any point in your premises — two minutes to get to the AED and two minutes to get back to the casualty.

Indoor AED Storage

For workplaces, schools, hotels, and public buildings, indoor wall-mounted AED cabinets are the most popular option. These are designed to be mounted at eye level in high-traffic areas such as reception areas, corridors, stairwells, or break rooms. Most indoor cabinets feature a clear window so the AED is visible without opening the door, an audible alarm that sounds when the cabinet is opened (alerting nearby staff that the AED has been deployed), and clear AED signage.

An AED wall sign should be placed near the cabinet to ensure it’s easy to locate from a distance. Consistent, recognisable signage throughout the building directs people to the nearest AED, even if they’re unfamiliar with the premises.

Outdoor AED Storage

For sports clubs, community centres, industrial sites, and public spaces, outdoor AED storage is essential. Outdoor cabinets are weatherproof and typically include heating elements to protect the AED from frost and extreme temperatures. Many outdoor cabinets can be locked with a keypad or combination lock, with the code available from emergency services dispatch or displayed on the cabinet itself.

When choosing an outdoor cabinet, look for IP65 or higher weather protection rating, thermostatically controlled heating, audible alarm on opening, robust construction resistant to vandalism, and clear AED signage visible from a distance.

AED Stands

For environments where wall mounting isn’t practical — such as warehouses, exhibition halls, marquees, or outdoor events — a freestanding AED stand provides a stable, visible, and portable solution. Stands can be moved to where they’re needed most, making them ideal for temporary setups or spaces where drilling into walls isn’t permitted.

How Many AEDs Do You Need?

The number of AEDs your premises needs depends on its size, layout, and the number of people present. The two-minute rule is the benchmark: if it takes longer than two minutes to retrieve the AED from any point in the building and return to the casualty, you need additional units. Multi-storey buildings, large campuses, and facilities with restricted-access areas typically require multiple AEDs to ensure adequate coverage.
